Hello Singers,
Thank you for your hard work in rehearsal yesterday. I know it’s an awful lot of talking and teaching at the beginning of the term, but as we move through, there is more and more singing. At least that’s the goal!
Sending along a few rehearsal notes to help with your at-home practice this week:
Cantique
– m.40-59 – we worked on notes and phrasing, and added French text. See below for a youtube video of the diction. So clear! Thanks to Will for sharing.
– we’re going for long, legato lines with dramatic dynamics
Singing in the Rain
– m.19-50 – careful with the rhythms, noticing which words/notes fall ON the beat and which ones fall OFF (in-between) the beat
– m.77 – TB has melody and SA has backup lines
Down to the River
– m.30 – we need a very steady beat, as if you have a metronome clicking in your head. This is what will make it sound together in performance
– m.72 – we will do an SSA split here. Sop 1 on the smaller notes, Sop 2 on the middle notes, and Alto on the lowest.
Skye Boat Song
– excellent work on 6/8 rhythm – we even did count singing for a few measures!
– we road mapped the song labeling the verses and choruses
– wherever there is a dotted slur (curved line) between notes, do not take a breath. We sing through the phrase.
Skyfall
– we marked and compared the 3 different choruses. We now know half the piece already!
– we need to channel our inner British Adele/James Bond and use TALL vowels instead of SPREAD vowels. We have several choristers who can help with this 🙂
Danny Boy
– thank you for working through the voicing checks. We decided that at m.30 we will do a S1 S2 A split. Sounded great. I’ll go through the rest of the score and figure out which notes we will cover and which ones we will omit. We will need our amazing altos to help with some tenor splits in places. So many notes!
Eagerly awaiting our new scores and hoping they are here before next rehearsal! Have a wonderful week and sing a little whenever you can. Feels great and helps you keep up your skills!
